ALLAH swt has ordered us to keep ourselves away from committing sins. To be honest and humble with others, we can be able to get a better place in the eyes of ALLAH swt but also our image in our surroundings and friends and family can improve.
A good muslim never hesitates to do good deeds and he never cares about the society when they step forward in the way of ALLAH swt. Backbiting is a sin that does not only hurts our image in the eyes of ALLAH swt but also our image is distorted in the eyes of our loved ones as well as those who know us for the first time. This is why ALLAH swt has told us to keep us away from this sin.
Allah says in the Qur'an: (49: 12)
"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah, verily, Allah is The One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful"
The verse above, tell us that backbiting is such a filthy act that a person who backbites is eating his dead brother’s meat. How can one eat a dead body’s meat? If it is so filthy to eat a dead body’s meat then backbiting is actually the same thing in the eyes of ALLAH and backbiter will never earn a good place in eyes of ALLAH swt until he repents.
Prophet MUHAMMAD s.a.w.w also condemned backbiting.
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said:
"Do you know what backbiting is?” They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He then said, “It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike.” Someone asked him, “But what if what I say is true?” The Messenger of Allah said, “If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him."
Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) also said:
"Who protects his tongue from unlawful utterances and his private parts from illegal sexual intercourse; I shall guarantee him entrance into Paradise."
Also Abu Mousa Al-Ash’aree narrated that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said:
"I asked the Messenger of Allah: Who is the best Muslim? The Messenger of Allah replied, "He is the one from whom Muslims are safe from the evil of his tongue and hands."
Therefore, to speak ill about others, even if it is right and true, is not good. When people cannot dare to speak ill about others in their presence, how can they do this in their absence forgetting the presence of ALLAH swt? Do they not fear ALLAH or they do not like to attach any importance to the creator? (Naudubillah)
Similarly, ALLAH swt forbids us to make fun of others because we think they are lower than us. ALLAH swt says that these people who you think are lower in level may be better than you in other aspects. Also we should not attach nick names with people based on any think or deed of them which we do not like.
Allah says: [Sûrah al-Hujurât: 11]
“O you who believe! Let not some men among you deride others who may be better than they (are), nor let women (deride) women who may be better than they are; neither defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. Evil is a bad name after faith.”
Ibn Kathîr, in his commentary on this verse, says about Allah’s words not defame one another:
Sneering and defamation of people is condemnable and accursed behavior. Allah says: “Woe to every sneering defamer.” [Sûrah Humazah: 1] Sneering is carried out through one’s actions and defamation is carried out through one’s words.
